Abstract

Since the advent of catheter ablation, the technique has become the gold standard in the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF). Today, the method of choice is used in the treatment of various forms of AF. The most commonly used energy sources for procedures are radiofrequency and cryothermal, which have already proven equally effective in the treatment of AF. Their mechanism is based on the destruction of myocardial tissue by freezing or tissue systems. These techniques are considered safe, but there are still risks. Using the rapid development of modern technologies in medicine, there is a search for alternative methods of treatment of AF, which can reduce complications and at the same time treat AF. Today, one of these can be pulsed field ablation (PFA). This is a new, promising method of treating AF. In PFA non-thermal energy is used for the destruction of myocardial tissues. PFA uses a series of high-amplitude electrical pulses, lasting microseconds, which damage only the myocardial cells, creating microscopic pores in the membrane, which ultimately leads to cell death.
