Abstract

Fibromuscular dysplasia is a nonatherosclerotic, noninflammatory arterial disease, commonly involving the renal arteries. We report a case of a 20-year-old female who was found to have severe aneurysmal enlargement of the right renal artery. Computed tomography revealed an aneurysm of the lower branch of right renal artery of a giant size (50×52 mm). The aneurysm was repaired surgically by replacement with end-to-end anastomosis. Fibromuscular dysplasia is the most common cause of renal artery stenosis in children over 1 year of age and can in rare cases be associated with the development of renal artery aneurysm. These combined lesions are very rare, and individuals affected are at increased risk of rupture of the aneurysm or/and renal dysfunction if left untreated.
