Abstract

Objective. Previously it was demonstrated that in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) platelets are potent  reactive oxygen species (ROS) producers. Luminol-enhanced chemiluminescence (LEC) can detect ROS generated  by platelets. The aim of this study was to evaluate endothelial function and platelets' ROS production in acute  myocardial infarction (AMI).

Material and methods. 50 AMI patients and 18 patients without CAD were enrolled in the study. In patients we measured luminol-enhanced chemiluminescence (LEC). Endothelial function was assessed by means of flowmediated dilation (FMD) test. The plasma level of the high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) was estimated as the marker of systemic inflammation.

Results. In AMI patients on the first day of admission we found a moderate negative correlation between levels of LEC and FMD (Spearman ρ = –0,44; р = 0,001). In patients without CAD, no significant correlations between levels of LEC, FMD, and hsCRP were revealed.

Conclusions. In our study we showed that in AMI patients on the first day of admission ROS production by platelets as evaluated from LEC is associated with severity of endothelial dysfunction.
