Abstract
In 1945, at the National Institute of Cardiology of Mexico in Mexico City, doctor I. Chávez and artist D. Rivera created a fresco that reflects the history of cardiology in portraits and discoveries of its distinguished representatives. The fresco is made in the style of monumental painting (muralism) and is a highly artistic multi-figure wall painting. In part 1 of the article, a content analysis of the left (anatomical and physiological) half of the fresco is carried out. It depicts physicians anatomists and physiologists, who in the II–XVIII centuries described the structure, function and some diseases of the heart and blood vessels (C. Galen, M. Servet, A. Vesalius, A. Cesalpino, W. Harvey, M. Malpighi, R. Vieussens, G.B. Morgagni), physicians who at the end of the XVIII the first half of the XIX century laid the foundation of clinical medicine and cardiology (L. von Auenbrugger, J.-N. Corvisart, R. Laёnnec, J.-B. Bouillaud, J. Škoda) and scientists who in the second half of the XIX – beginning of the XX century described conduction system of the heart (J.E. Purkyně, W. His Jr., K. Aschoff, S. Tawara, A. Keith and M.W. Flack). An analysis of the frescoes and available sources made it possible to establish the identities of all 19 depicted physicians and scientists and briefly reflect their contribution to the development of cardiology. The lower part of the fresco is dedicated to the pulse diagnosis of diseases in the peoples of Asia and EuropeReferences
