Keywords: quality of life acquired heart disease heart valve replacement
Abstract
The prevalence of valvular heart disease exceeds 42 million people worldwide and has recently increased in older age groups. The increased prevalence is caused mainly by the aging of the population and the active use of transthoracic echocardiography to diagnose valve disease. Recently, acquired heart diseases are mainly caused by degeneration and calcification of native valves, while rheumatic origin relegates to the second place. The former trend is more common for the developed countries, while the latter is mainly observed in the developing countries. The review article presents novel insights into the assessment of quality of life (QoL) in patients with acquired heart disease. Therefore, it is pivotal to measure QoL and assess changes in its postoperative indicators as it is a key driver predicting the effectiveness of surgical interventions. The emphasis is placed on the contribution of age and gender-related differences in the QoL of patients with acquired heart disease. The results of the studies evaluating the differences in QoL between the recipients of biological and mechanical heart valve prostheses as well as the gaps in evidence for future studies are presented.References
