Abstract

A content analysis of the obscure work “Clinical Cardiology” by S. Neuhof (1917) was carried out. It is shown that the book contains comprehensive information on the heart and diseases of the cardiovascular system known at the beginning of the twentieth century, with clinical observations by the author. The meaning and origin of the terms “clinical medicine” and “clinical cardiology" are discussed, and a short biography of S. Neuhof (1871–1924) is provided. A summary of chapters 1 to 10 of the book is introduced into scientific use. The chapters cover embryology, anatomy and physiology of the heart, functional diagnostics of heart and vascular diseases (arterio- and phlebography, electrocardiography, orthodiascopy), heart rhythm and conduction disorders (causes, diagnostics, treatment), physical examination of patients (interview, examination, percussion, auscultation). It is concluded that the book, published more than 100 years ago, was the first scientific and practical guide for doctors and students who wanted to devote their professional activities to the new field of internal medicine in the early twentieth century – functional diagnostics of heart diseases, or cardiology.
